Chongching is the new capital of manufacturing cars-welcome to the new Detroit .  With hills valleys and no one bicycling, it’s a great place to make, test  and sell them.

Not really,  but cruise directors and river guides have been known to pull pranks after leaving Chongching Harbor on the way down to the Three Gorges and beyond.

In the old days foreigners could not make it by boat up the Yangtze river because of the treacherous rapids unless they enlisted the help of the boatmen. These fearless wanderers lugged boats through the hard water sometimes dying in the process. Chongching had it’s share of boatmen.

Chongching was the capital of China during World War 2. After Japanese forces took over Nanjing and reeked havoc on all the country to the west, Chongching became the force to deal with. The Japanese could nt conquer their stronghold.

With hills like they have in Chongching  if the chinese team practiced here the runners would be well versed in the art of winning.

Oh, those hills! San Franciso and Chongching have a lot in common.

It is said that the most beautiful women come from Chongching. Because of the cloudy weather all year round their skin does not get so much sun. This is attractive to men all around China.

The weather can be rainy and cold all through the winter and spring. In summer though along with Nanjing and Wuhan(also towns along the Yangtze River), Chonghing is called one of the three furnaces, reaching temperatures in the 90’s Fahrenheit or upper thirty’s centigrade.

The Yangtze River Super Dam Project by 2008 will  be mostly completed. One of the consequences of the project  is a giant lake behind the dam that stretches to chongching. This will be one of the largest lakes in the world at 800 miles long. The distance  is equal to that between New York and Chicago.

A major concern is that the waste that is generated by Chongching residents(30 million people)will create a giant  cesspool instead of a lake. This can create severe pollution problems. The River before flowed very free for millenniums.

Another problem that is coming out of the project is that  the river must rise to unprecedented levels when the dam is plugged. This is causing one of the most widespread relocation of people ever. One quarter of China’s population lives along the Yangtze.  Many are being moved up the hills and mountains.

Another problem with the dam is that this huge rise in the water level will submerge a lot of the ancient Chinese artifacts and historical places.  One of the more interesting places that will be underwater is the Ghostly town of Fengdu. Here the spirits are very much alive and is it’s a major cultural attraction.
